Why you shouldn’t do your Fire Risk Assessments in-house

Why you shouldn’t do your Fire Risk Assessments in-house

12th September 2021

As businesses try and return to some form of normality, the new rules and regulations can be overbearing. At the forefront of peoples mind is protecting their staff from Covid-19, but many business owners have forgotten about fire safety.

As the responsible person, you must review your fire risk assessments and identify what you need to do to prevent fire and keep people safe. Many business owners don’t have the time or expertise to do their fire risk assessment themselves, so we recommend you appoint a professional risk assessor as their competent person.

“We’ve seen businesses who have created one way systems from barricading fire exits or propped open fire doors with extinguishers”  Frazer

All businesses and residential apartment blocks must conduct a Fire Risk Assessment “FRA”. The FRA reviews the building’s fire risks and makes recommendations to improve the safety. If you have more than five occupants in the building, your fire risk assessment must be written down.

The FRA may be conducted by a ‘competent‘ individual, which gives room for a non-qualified fire risk assessor to complete the assessment. But as we’re considering life and death, the person responsible must be confident and comfortable assessing the building against fire risk factors. So, if you’re ever unsure, we advise using a qualified, registered Fire Risk Assessor.

“In recent months, we have seen dangerous hazards that have not been picked up in the building’s FRA, like the use of expanding foams in large spaces. Many are combustible and should only be used for small holes because expanding foams combust in seconds and produce CO2 and other toxic gasses, so excessive use has the potential to be extremely dangerous”

“We know what we’re looking for when performing fire risk assessments and have the knowledge to advise on how to improve peoples’ safety” Frazer
