5 times to call your electrician

Most homeowners have limited knowledge of electrical wiring and how electricity works, which often means they don’t recognise when something is potentially dangerous. It’s important to understand when it’s safe to carry out electrical repairs and know when you should contract an electrician.

As homeowner’s use of electricity increases, there are new electrical codes which means that unless your home has been built very recently, your electrical system could benefit from upgrades and repairs. But how do you know?

Here are 5 times you should call your electrician:

1. If your electrical circuit trips frequently or you notice fuses that blow, call your electrician. Don’t be tempted to keep replacing fuses or resetting your circuit breakers as it’s likely your system is drawing more electrical current than it can safely handle.
2. If you have any loose wires that aren’t attached to the walls by trunking or fixers, for example, if they’re hidden under rugs or run across the skirting boards. It’s likely you need more power outlets, which will not only improve the safety but the aesthetics too.
3. If your power points or switches are warm or give any type of electric shock. It’s likely your circuit is being demanded of too much electricity or you have old aluminium wiring.
4. If you have outdated plug sockets that don’t accommodate a standard 3 prong plug, you’re likely to have outdated electrical wiring, which can be very dangerous.
5. If your lights dim unexpectedly or flicker, it’s time to call your electrician. This is an indication your electrical system is working beyond the capacity it’s designed for, which is unsafe and rectifiable by additional circuits and receptacles.
