Apprenticeships- 5 benefits for you and your apprentice

Apprenticeships- 5 benefits for you and your apprentice

1st February 2022

Over fourteen years ago, Safeguard’s director, Frazer, was hired as an electrical apprentice, which changed the trajectory of his career. His apprenticeship gave him the skills and experience to work in the electrical industry, and since then, he has moved on to build Safeguard Electrical; a Cardiff based incorporated company that employs 5 staff and services construction, commercial and residential contracts across the UK.

“Unlike going to university, doing an apprenticeship gives you real-life, hands on experience, which is invaluable for people looking to work in trade” Frazer

Five years ago, Frazer hired his first apprentice, Jerome, who is now an experienced, key team member, who in August 2021, started sharing his knowledge with Dylan; our most recent apprentice.

“Starting out as an apprentice was perfect for me. It was practical, and a good way to learn the skills of the job without being in a classroom” Jerome

Investing in an apprentice is a cost effective way to improve your workforce, bring energy and enthusiasm to your team, and give back to the economy.

“Hiring an apprentice is exciting for them and for us as a company because, as a team, our productivity increases and everyone’s leadership skills improve” Frazer

At Safeguard, we want to encourage companies in trade to hire apprentices; it’s a valuable opportunity for both parties to up skill and give back to our industry.

For the apprentice, it’s an opportunity for them to:

  1. Learn from people in the know, workers who have been in their trade for years, who can pass on their knowledge and skills in a practical way
  2. Gain the skills employers are looking for, and the experience, so they can improve their CV and get the job they want
  3. Avoid student loans and get paid whilst they’re learning
  4. Build their professional network by working with people in their local area
  5. Learn transferable skills from working with different types of people; like communication skills and problem solving

For the employer, hiring an apprentices gives them the opportunity to:

  1. Improve the quality of their services by keeping their team fresh and new
  2. Work with young people who are excited to learn about the way their business works
  3. Employ someone who they train and adapt to suit their needs
  4. Up skill their other employees’ leadership capabilities
  5. Receive funding from the government to support their training and expand their company’s team
